**Montreal Mayor Michael Applebaum has announced his resignation in the face of corruption charges while maintaining his innocence. Being mayor of Montreal is not something one can do while defending themselves against these accusations. This is why I am resigning as mayor of Montreal,” Applebaum said in a brief statement Tuesday afternoon, referring to the 14 charges he faces, including fraud and conspiracy. 3:48 PM ET.

On Monday, Applebaum left provincial police headquarters in a taxi without commenting to the media after his arrest on criminal charges that include:
Fraud against the government.
Breach of trust.
Conspiracy and municipal corruption.

The province and the majority of municipal councillors have said the city should select an interim mayor to serve until the next municipal election in November, rather than placing the city under trusteeship or advancing the date of the municipal election.**

**British Prime Minister David Cameron said it was no secret that there were “very different views around the G8 table,” but the leaders overcame “fundamental differences” to agree on a way forward through “frank discussion.”

The G8 declaration did not mention Syrian President Bashar al-Assad by name or call for him to step down but Cameron said it would be “unthinkable” for him to be part of any future government in the war-torn country where an estimated 93,000 people have died. The declaration says the G8 countries are committed to working together. They endorsed the idea of the peace conference to be held in Geneva “as soon as possible” and paving the way for a “transitional governing body” to take power in Syria.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper said the fact that Russian President Vladimir Putin, Syria’s key ally, agreed to the declaration and its mention of a transitional government marks a shift in his position.

The statement includes pledges to:

*Increase commitment to humanitarian aid.
*Maximize the diplomatic pressure” to bring all sides to the table as soon as possible.
*Back a “transitional governing body” for Syria.
*Learn the lessons of Iraq” and maintain Syria’s public institutions.
*Work together to “rid Syria of terrorists and extremists” — a new commitment by the G8, Cameron said.
*Condemn the use of chemical weapons “by anyone” in Syria, and allow for a UN probe, also new Cameron said.
*Support a new non-sectarian government in Syria.

**Bomb plots targeting the New York Stock Exchange and the city’s subway were among more than 50 terrorist acts worldwide thwarted by top-secret surveillance programs since the 2001 al Qaeda attacks on the United States, security officials said Tuesday. Bomb plots targeting the New York Stock Exchange and the city’s subway were among more than 50 terrorist acts worldwide thwarted by top-secret surveillance programs since the 2001 al Qaeda attacks on the United States, security officials said Tuesday.
Startling details disclosed at a House intelligence committee hearing reflected a unified effort by the Obama administration and legislators to defend the telephone and e-mail surveillance made public this month by classified leaks to newspapers.
Testimony by Gen. Keith Alexander, the National Security Agency director, as well as officials from the FBI, Department of Justice and the Director of National Intelligence office called the programs created under the Patriot Act in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks a vital tool against terrorist plots. Joined by panel Chairman Rep. Mike Rogers and other legislators, they condemned the document leaks by former government contractor Edward Snowden as harmful to the United States and its allies.
In recent years, Alexander said, information “gathered from these programs provided government with critical leads to prevent over 50 potential terrorist events in more than 20 countries around the world.”

Details of most of the thwarted terrorism acts remain secret, but national security officials said they were working on declassifying more information and could have a report to Congress as early as this week.**
